A Gift for My Younger Self

A platformer built around "unfairness": reach the goal in time and you pick your ability; run late and chance decides. Dashes, time rewinds and clones open up different ways past the same obstacle. A gift to the team's younger selves.

Description

A Gift for My Younger Self is a single-player adventure that mixes platforming, space-time puzzles and random ability rewards. It is also the team's gift to their younger selves.

The story begins with an unsigned box. Open it, and you tumble into a strange world stitched together from memories: a familiar home, an old classroom, the blocky maps you once played on with friends, and an office you have yet to set foot in. Everyday places become levels to explore and clear, and as you make your way through them, you gradually find out where the gift came from.

The gift is a little "unfair." In timed challenges, reaching the goal in time lets you pick your ability reward; run out of time, and chance decides your next gift. Dash, double jump, stepping stones, slowed platforms, time rewind and clones give the same obstacle different solutions. You can hunt for shortcuts or take the long way around, get past a hard section on skill, or recombine abilities to build your own path. Falling or running out of time never takes away your chance to keep exploring and reach the end of the story. As the team puts it: others give you abilities; you choose how to clear the level.

The team hopes the experience brings both the tension of "so close" and the surprise of "wait, that works?", and lets the curious kid who never stopped trying have a great time playing once more.

How Tripo was used

Tripo's Unreal Engine plugin played a key role in this demo. Models generated with Tripo went straight into Unreal Engine, closing the gap between level design and environment art, so the team could build prototypes with real visual quality while still designing the scenes.
