Unwrapped

A kid's favorite song becomes a 3D world to walk into and take apart: wake each instrument, mix the track by where you stand, chain effects on an object-based mixing table, and hear how the song is made.

Description

Unwrapped is a gift for a kid who loves a song but has no idea how it is made. A parent, a sibling or a teacher picks the song, and it becomes a 3D world the kid can walk into and take apart, alone or together.

It starts in silence. The song has been split into its instruments, and each one stands somewhere in the world, asleep. Walk up to one and it joins in, layer by layer, until the whole track is playing. Then a table falls from the sky. The sound is spatial: where you stand is the mix. Walk toward the drums and they get louder; turn your head and the mix turns with you. Pick up an instrument and carry it, and its sound moves with it. Mute one, or listen to it on its own.

The table is a mixing desk you play with objects, inspired by the Reactable. Set an effect (reverb, delay, filter, distortion) next to an instrument and it applies to that instrument; set another beside it and the two chain. Step inside an effect to see what it does on a live graph, and hold a key to hear only what it adds. A red button puts everything back.

To keep it fun, there is a tutorial that waits for you to do each step; missions with stars, such as putting the singer in a cathedral, leaving only the beat or making the bass growl, each checked against the actual sound; five landscapes that react to the music; and a Lyrics mode where every word the singer sings becomes an object flying out of the singer.

A different song makes a different world: upload your own and the pipeline builds it. The game is built with three.js and the Web Audio API and runs in the browser; the author calls it the game they wish someone had given them as a kid. Everything was made from scratch during the event, with the first commit on September 20, 2026. The only shared piece is a small, generic Demucs loading wrapper that follows the same pattern as an earlier, unrelated project.

How Tripo was used

Tripo is the core of this world: every 3D object is a Tripo model, and what gets made depends on the music.

  • Sound drives shape: each instrument separated from the song is measured for brightness, density and noisiness, and those numbers pick the words of its prompt for Tripo.
  • Lyrics become models: the nouns in the sung lyrics become Tripo models too.
  • Any song, a new world: the Tripo API is chained with Demucs, librosa, Whisper and three.js, so any song becomes a new world automatically.
